I joined the military in 2004 in Vancouver, BC. After completing my training, I was posted to 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI) in Edmonton, AB. Two years later, I was an operational replacement on TF 1-06 and was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. As a Light Utility Vehicle Wheeled (LUVW) driver and gunner, I travelled all over Kandahar and Helmand Province conducting convoy and force protection operations. I also conducted combat operations alongside the 2nd Battalion PPCLI Battle Group in Zhari District of Panjawaii.
Once I returned home, I looked to expand my military career by applying for the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR). In 2008, after 10 months on the Special Forces Course and continuation training, I was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, as part of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force. Our primary task was conducting Capture / Kill Missions for medium and high value targets operating in the Canadian Battle Group’s area of operations. Many of these operations were conducted with members of JTF2, DEVGRU and CIA assets.
After completing several courses and training deployments, in 2011, I was once again deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, to conduct Village Stability Operations (VSO) in a district on the Horn of Panjawaii called Zangabad. Our task was to build trust with the local population, carry out presence patrols, meet with village elders and aggressively search for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that could harm civilians and coalition forces. Over my 135 days in Zangabad, my team and I spent 124 days outside the wire conducting operations. We located and destroyed weapons and munitions caches, exploited and rendered safe IEDs, conducted raids and ambushes against Taliban insurgents by day and night. We also built a human intelligence network in the Zangabad District to provide actionable intelligence against insurgent forces in the area.
During my second deployment in Zangabad, I was involved in a patrol where a members of our team were wounded by an IED. I assisted in treating the casualties, and coordinated their extraction in the face of the enemy, and at times, while under direct fire. For my actions in April of 2011, I was awarded the Commander of CANSOFCOM commendation.
Upon returning, from 2011 to 2015, I taught on two special forces courses at a training facility in Moyock, North Carolina, formerly known as Blackwater. I became one of the Subject Matter Experts in Unarmed Combat, including Combatives, Special Operations Assault Breaching, Close Quarters Battle (CQB) and became one of the lead small arms instructors within CSOR. In 2015, I deployed to Amman, Jordan, to participate in the 7th Annual Warrior Competition at King Abdullah’s Special Operations Training Center. I conducted joint training with the Jordanian and Lebanese special forces, US Army Green Berets and Australia’s 2nd Commando Regiment.
In late 2015, after completing 11 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, I left the military and moved to Calgary, Alberta. I began working as a security manager as well as a sales associate and range officer. I spent quite a bit of time traveling across Europe and South Africa. In South Africa, I attended the Ronin South Africa Close Protection Course in Cape Town. I completed the close protection course with a 91% average, finishing top of the class. I also spent 2 months in Johannesburg learning about the security industry and being mentored by an ex-police officer who owns and operates his own security company. Inspired, in February of 2017, I came back to Calgary, where my business partner and I incorporated our company Grey Leaf Solutions Inc. From there, Operators of No Nation (ONN) Training was born.
